TODAY'S SUBJECT: Detroit-based auto supplier American Axle and Manufacturing (AAM) hosted a book drive and Jeans Day at its Detroit-area locations to raise money for Focus: HOPE.
THE CAUSE: Focus: HOPE is a Detroit-based, non-denominational, nonprofit organization that aims to overcome racism and poverty by providing food programs, education and training for underrepresented minorities and others. Focus: HOPE, established in Detroit in March 1968 by Father William T. Cunningham, Father Jerome Fraser and Eleanor Josaitis, is dedicated to finding intelligent and practical solutions to hunger, economic disparity, inadequate education and racial divisiveness.
BACKGROUND: AAM has had a longstanding association with Focus: HOPE, including its ground-breaking Machinist Training Institute. Additionally, AAM is fulfilling a multiyear pledge to support Focus: HOPE through annual contributions that will total $ 100,000.
RESULTS: During the week of March 2, AAM associates donated more than 1,000 new and gently used books for school-age children, families and senior citizens. In addition to the book drive, $ 1,125 in associate donations was raised through an AAM Jeans Day fund-raiser. The books were delivered to Focus: HOPE for distribution to families and children in the Detroit area.
ON GIVING: "We knew that if we recruited the help of AAM associates to open their hearts and pockets for Focus: HOPE, they would not let us down," said AAM Executive Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer Michael K. Simonte. "Eleanor Josaitis was a terrific community leader whose message remains strong. It is AAM's privilege to be part of such an important cause, and we will continue to keep Eleanor's spirit alive through community involvement with Focus: HOPE."
