American Centrifuge project surpasses 1 million hours

PIKETON -- USEC Inc. announced this past week its American Centrifuge project in Piketon has surpassed 1 million hours of machine run-time in its integrated testing program.

USEC has been operating centrifuges at the Centrifuge demonstration facility since August 2007.

"One million hours of run-time is a testament to the robustness of this leading-edge technology and a great accomplishment for our team," said Dan Rogers, general manager of American Centrifuge Plant operations. "With this experience in the demonstration facility, we have improved the technology and gained extensive knowledge and operating data."

USEC is continuing work on a research, development and demonstration program proposed by the Department of Energy to enhance the technical and financial readiness of the centrifuge technology. It has invested more than $ 2 billion in the project and indicates it will continue funding the program through the end of this month in hopes of receiving additional federal funding.
